It is recognized by schools, employers, and immigration offices in English-speaking countries, especially in UK, Australia, Canada, United States, and New Zealand.
There are two versions of IELTS test: Academic and General Training. Academic test is for people who want to study at universities or need it for professional registration. General Training test is for people moving to an English-speaking country for work or training. Both types can be taken on paper or on a computer, and Speaking test is done in person with an examiner.
Results are available 13 days after paper tests and 1-5 days after computer tests, and scores are valid for two years.
IELTS is popular is available in over 150 countries. IELTS is often chosen because Speaking test is in person, which some people find more comfortable than computer-based speaking tests like PTE.
Listening: Listening is a 30-minute section with an additional 10 minutes for transferring answers in paper-based tests. This section comprises four parts with 40 questions, each focusing on a different accent and context to simulate real-life listening situations. Part 1 presents a conversation between two people on everyday topics, while Part 2 is a monologue, such as a speech about local facilities. In Part 3, candidates listen to a conversation among up to four people, usually within an academic context. Part 4 involves a monologue on an academic subject. Question types in this section include multiple-choice, matching, map/diagram labeling, note completion, sentence completion, and short-answer questions.
Reading: Reading lasts 60 minutes and consists of 40 questions. The test format varies depending on the module—Academic or General Training. In the Academic Reading test, candidates read three lengthy passages, drawn from books, journals, or magazines, that may include academic vocabulary but cover topics of broad interest. The General Training Reading test has three sections, progressing from basic social English texts, like advertisements, to work-related materials, and finally a longer, more descriptive passage. The question types for both versions include multiple-choice, matching headings, identifying information, sentence completion, and summary completion.
Writing: Writing is also a 60-minute section and includes two tasks. In the Academic module, Task 1 involves describing and interpreting data presented in a graph, table, chart, or diagram in at least 150 words. In the General Training module, Task 1 is a letter written based on a specific scenario, such as requesting information or explaining a situation, also requiring at least 150 words. Task 2 is common to both versions and involves writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem, with a minimum of 250 words.
Speaking: Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, lasting 11 to 14 minutes. This section has three parts: Part 1 includes general questions on familiar topics, such as home, family, work, and interests, for 4 to 5 minutes. In Part 2, candidates are given a topic and have one minute to prepare before speaking on it for 1 to 2 minutes. Part 3 is a discussion based on the topic in Part 2, allowing the examiner to ask questions that explore ideas and opinions more deeply, lasting an additional 4 to 5 minutes.
