Mastering the PTE Exam in 2025: Key Changes and Effective Templates

blog

If you’ve taken the PTE exam in 2023 or 2024 and are now planning to sit for it in 2025, you might be wondering what has changed and which strategies still work. Don’t worry—this blog will guide you through the latest updates and provide you with the most effective templates to ace your exam.

Hello everyone, I’m Vishal from Vision Language Experts, and in this blog, I’ll walk you through the key changes in the PTE exam format, what used to work before, and what works now. By the end of this, you’ll know exactly how to adapt your preparation to score perfectly in 2025.

What’s changed in 2025?

The PTE exam has evolved, and so have the strategies to tackle it. Let’s break down the changes for each section and how you can adapt to them.

1. Essay Writing: From Generic to Specific

In 2023 and 2024, using a template that relied heavily on topic keywords was enough to score well. For example, you could simply insert keywords like “air flights” or “products and services” into a pre-defined structure and achieve a perfect score.

However, in 2025, this approach no longer works. The examiners now expect you to include your own ideas and specific content related to the topic. Here’s how you can adapt:

Updated Essay Template for 2025

  • First Paragraph: Use keywords from the topic statement.
  • Second Paragraph: Include your own ideas—positive or negative points. For example, if the topic is about employers taking employees’ opinions, you could write about how it increases motivation and productivity.
  • Third Paragraph: Discuss the opposite perspective. For instance, highlight potential downsides like lack of concentration or wrong decisions.
  • Conclusion: Reiterate the keywords from the topic statement.

Key Tip:

Avoid generic phrases like “increasing knowledge” or “enhancing productivity.” Instead, use specific keywords relevant to the topic. You can find a list of such keywords in the Prediction Files folder on the Vision Language Experts portal.

2. Describe Image: From Repetition to Trends

In the past, the Describe Image section allowed you to repeat phrases like “From the image, I can see…” multiple times. This approach worked well in 2023 and 2024 but is no longer effective in 2025.

Updated Describe Image Template for 2025

  • Introduction: Mention the main topic of the image. For example, “The image highlights keyword and keyword.”
  • Left/Top Side: Describe elements on the left or top of the image.
  • Right/Bottom Side: Describe elements on the right or bottom.
  • Trends: Include the highest and lowest elements in the image. For instance, if the image shows data for different regions, mention the region with the highest and lowest values.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the remaining keywords.

Key Tip:

Use varied vocabulary to avoid being flagged by the algorithm. If there’s no clear highest or lowest element, use terms like “elements,” “stages,” or “components.”

3. Retell Lecture: From Keywords to Phrases

Previously, you could score well in the Retell Lecture section by simply picking up keywords from the audio. However, in 2025, this strategy is insufficient.

Updated Retell Lecture Template for 2025

  • Introduction: Start with a phrase that captures the main idea of the lecture. For example, “The lecture discussed global warming and rising temperatures.”
  • Body: Include phrases rather than isolated keywords. If you don’t have a long phrase, combine two smaller ones. For instance, “climate change and its impact on ecosystems.”
  • Conclusion: Summarize the key points using phrases.

Key Tip:

Avoid submitting answers with no phrases, as they will likely be flagged by the AI and sent for human re-evaluation, which could result in a lower score.
